Chuck, Slew was one of the all-time greats and he was better than Affirmed and the Bid. We all agree that he ran an amazing race in that 78 JC. However, my vote for his “greatest” performance was his first race as a 3YO. It was an allowance race at Hialeah where Larry Saumell on White Rammer yelled and screamed at Slew to get him riled up. In fact, Cruguet went after Saumell following the race for his crazy antics. However, Slew just ran away from White Rammer, won by 9, and set the track record for 7F with 1:20:3, a record that he still holds ( and unfortunately, he will hold forever).

I miss Hialeah. The first couple of years that I trained I had a barn at Hialeah. What a place even then in less than 100% condition
